About The Union

Sac City Caregivers & Parents Union are families that came together during the pandemic to fight budget cuts. Since then, we’ve continued to advocate for students and families across SCUSD. Together we have a stronger voice.

We are an independent grassroots organization that is not affiliated with the District or its labor unions, although we strive to work collaboratively with all.

When We Fight, We Win!

Keeping Parents Informed

Sac City CPU kept parents informed during strike-related school closures. Holding nightly interactive meetings, we provided updates about the status of negotiations and school reopening.

Defended After-School Programs

We defended after-school programs when the district proposed cutting 4th R (after-school) programming.

Stopped Budget Cuts

Successfully stopped budget cuts and the plan to move students enrolled in special day classes mid-school year.

What SCUSD Policies Ruin Student Enrollment

Have an enrollment story? Tell us at @gmail.com

  • Not having a school calendar until April of each year when other Districts have calendars 2 or 3 years ahead

  • School sites unable to determine their own enrollment figures - principals have no say in how classes are built/enrolled

  • Con-capping* - find a better solution to over enrollment at school sites

  • Split grade classes across most elementary schools (SCUSD has 50 split grade classes at the elementary level in 2022-23, with more expected next year.)

  • Over-enrollment at the start of each school year in middle and high school classes

  • No class schedules until the first day of school (or even later)

  • No back-up teachers for specialized classes, causing class cancellations

  • Overly-complicated enrollment system

  • No clear path for enrolling your child in a school of choice

  • Too much paperwork - not streamlined and online and nowhere to check status online

  • Enrollment rules change every year, especially for specialty programs

  • No transit plan to school sites

* Con-capping is when SCUSD busses children from an over-enrolled neighborhood school to another school. Kids miss part of the start and end of the school day, classrooms are disrupted, and kids are pulled back to school sites the moment a seat opens up (disrupting their lives again).
